Quality and production increased
As the leading paper manufacturer in Croatia, DS Smith in Belisce produces around 220,000 tonnes of packaging paper annually on PM 2 & PM 3. In September 2020, a new TurboWinder from Bellmer was installed on PM 2, which meets all requirements for increased production and roll quality.
Up to now, a winder from 1974 was operated on PM2. DS Smith was looking for a bespoke winder solution that could support their commitment to safe and effi cient paper making. Due to the very tight space available, a “standard” TurboWinder could not be installed, and therefore, a specially designed winder for this application was built. The modernization included a completely new slitter unit with automatic slitter positioning and edge trim removal system, a new rewind unit using a few old components, and a new safety concept. Machine and drive controls, drive motors and hydraulics have been renewed and the unwinding system delivered in 2006 has been integrated into the new controls.
A particular challenge was the dismantling and assembly of the winder in the basement, without the overhead crane having access to the slitter and rewind unit. Installation and commissioning took place from the end of August to mid-September 2020. In just 14 days, the old winder was dismantled, the necessary foundation work was done, and the new one was installed and put into operation.
This was only possible because the new components had been tested in advance as far as possible and the TurboWinder was brought into the hall almost completely assembled. All project goals in terms of operator safety, quality and production improvement were met or even exceeded.
The key to this success was the partnership, solution-oriented and flexible cooperation between Belisce and Bellmer. An important fact, which the Maintenance Manager of Belisce Mill Dejan Brkic confirmed: “Everything related to this rebuild had to be custom engineered due to positioning of the winder and space limitations. Preparation was done very minutely, there was no time or the space for errors and omissions.
On top of all, second wave of COVID-19 was spreading across Europe, making this project even more difficult to complete. Despite all those issues, Bellmer has proven to be not just reliable, but also flexible supplier… A job well done.“
