Sludge dewatering with the AKUPRESS BX for SMURFIT Kappa Colombia
A large number of production sites in Europe and the Americas make Smurfit Group a major player in packaging business. The mill in Yumbo, Colombia produces packaging, printing and writing paper based on pulp made on site and/or recycled fibre. Bellmer Kufferath had been in contact with the mill for a while as the existing sludge dewatering plant could no more fulfill the requirements. A replacement was considered, especially as the
plan to burn sludge in a biomass boiler made higher dryness obligatory. The challenge to treat a combination of sludge from raw water treatment, pulp lines and paper machines motivated Bellmer Kufferath to make comprehensive lab analysis.
Pilot plant tests on site validated the results that were expected from lab tests and brought about the decision for a sludge dewatering plant consisting of an AKSE S 175/09 disc thickener and an AKUPRESS BX 1000 screw press. It was installed in September 2019 and started up successfully in December of the same year. The torque control by movable screen basket enables maximum dry content.
