SONOCO was founded on May 10, 1899, when Major James Lide Coker and Walter F. Smith, an experienced cone maker from New Bedford, MA, formed the Southern Novelty Company, with Coker as its first president. The Company’s initial product was a cone-shaped paper yarn carrier used for winding and transporting yarn. Since most of the textile cones of the day were wooden, paper cones were a novelty – hence the name the “Southern Novelty Company.” The Company soon became the leading producer of cones in the United States. In 1923, the Southern Novelty Company name was changed to Sonoco Products Company, or „SONOCO,“ using the first two letters from each word of its original name.
Today, SONOCO is a global provider of consumer, industrial, healthcare and protective packaging. With annualized net sales of approximately $5.2 billion, Sonoco has 23,000 employees working in more than 300 operations in 34 countries, serving many of the world’s best-known brands to 85 nations. SONOCO is one of the world’s leading producers of Uncoated Recycled Board (URB), with 12 mills and 20 machines in the U.S. and Canada. Its headquarters are in Hartsville, SC., where it has been since its inception.

The project goal to convert the No. 10 Paper Machine at the Hartsville mill, SC. into an Uncoated Recycled Board state-of-the-art machine with an annual production capacity of approx. 180,000 tons, making it the largest and lowest cost URB machine in the world. The package awarded to Bellmer to convert the PM10 to produce Uncoated Recycled Board (URB) includes (2) vertical screens for the approach flow system, a new starch preparation line, new TurboStreamer headbox, top wire unit TurboFormer, press section rebuild with a TurboPress (shoe press), TurboCalender Hard Nip and two agitators for the existing dry-end under machine pulper.
The equipment should be arriving at the mill by December 2021. The installation will take place during January and February 2022 and the PM10 commissioning and start-up should happen by the middle of March 2022.
