India is the largest democracy in the world with over a billion in population. In order to keep its population informed, the country has over 22,000 newspapers, of which 1,800 are dailies, making its media market is the second largest in the world. The symbiotic relationship between the access to information and the freedom of choice has not only established the robustness of India‘s democracy, but it has made domestic newsprint manufacturers integral to the country‘s democratic process.
Emami Paper Mills Limited, part of the Emami Group of Industries, has paper mills located at Balasore (Odisha) and Dakshineswar (W.B., Kolkata) and is one of the most environmentally friendly paper mills in Eastern India. The company is the largest newsprint manufacturer of India with 1,500,000 t/a capacity. The other line of business of the company is 2,000,000 t/a capacity consumer packaging board of recycle grade as well as that of virgin grade. Its paperboard has also a good reputation in export market and about 10% – 15% of its recycle grade paperboard is exported to overseas market. Malfunctions or even a production shutdown are of course a very serious problem! The shoe press at BM 4 in Odisha recently experienced malfunctions caused by repair welding on piping, and therefore, the plant had to shut down and action had to be taken quickly. A team from Bellmer‘s Indian site was already at the plant within a few hours of receiving the message. The Bellmer team found blockages in the shoe lubrication system.
Because removing the nozzles would have been very risky and time-consuming, it was decided to replace the shoe after a discussion with the Emami team.
